Goats and kudzu
June 5th, 2007For those of you in the South, you know how kudzu takes over just about everything. Here’s an NY Times article on how the town of Chattanooga is using goats to fend off the insistent and invasive vines.

I love pics of this protest of UC Berkeley students sitting in on redwood trees on campus to protest the UC’s deal with BP to research biofuels. Way to go!
For those of you who like to play video games about the second coming (who doesn’t?), there’s a new video game by the makers of the Left Behind series– Left Behind: Eternal Forces.
Supposedly, the idea behind this racist game is to blow up non-Christians: Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. Nice way to teach the kids about Christian respect and tolerance.
Very freaky. But, you gotta admit the folks behind this whole series are marketing whizzes.
New Battlestar fans, check out these The Simpsons-esque spoofs of the characters from Battlestar Galactica.
Crafty folks or scuba diving fans: check out this link to a crocheted “Hyperbolic Coral Reef”. For those of you who know fun fur or eyelash yarn, this is definitely the coolest use I have seen of what can be some pretty ugly yarn!
You can submit your own crochet contribution to the reef here.
Not the movie (it sucked) but the book?
In any case, there’s a character in it who is a kleptomaniac who has been stealing thousands of objects for years– it seemed a little ridiculous to me when I read it (even though I liked the book), but this story of a Japanese man who stole thousands of school-girls’ sneakers makes me realize there really are folks out there who do these things! Follow the links from this link to the news story.
I’m finding that these days with my dissertation writing and grant proposal writing, I’m not finding much interesting to post about except for grade-school humor.
So. . . in keeping with that, you cat lovers, check out these silly cat pics. My fave is the cat that hears voices. . .
Thanks to Tom for forwarding these on to me.
Ok, this has to be one of the weirdest of the Jesus or Mary image sightings I have seen: a doggie butt, check it out.
Last night, Tom and I went with some friends to see the Carolina Rollergirls take on the Sin City (Las Vegas) Rollers ! I had never been to a women’s roller derby game and I gotta say I loved it!
Complete with black fishnets, cheerleader skirts or hot-pants (depending on the player’s persona) along with knee and shin-pads and helmets these chicks kicked some ass! We beat the Sin City Rollers about 130 to 60. (I’m not good at remembering scores.)
I encourage everyone to check-out some women’s flat-track derby games if you can. For those of you in the Bay Area there are the B.A.D. girls (Bay Area Derby Girls) or in Boston, the Boston Derby Dames . It looks like the next Bay Area game is Sept. 30. Here in N.C. we gotta wait ’til November 19.
What I want to know is how a monkey, kitten and chicken came to be hanging out together?
I could’ve sworn that this is a picture of our fat cat Mika, but I promise you she is not a bomb! But, I’ll leave that for you you to decide as you take the “bomb or not bomb” test.
Think the religious right will support this in the name of security?
When my friend Mary was in town a few months ago we saw a car with the bumper sticker “Republicans for Voldemort”– we loved it!
I finally got to tracking the maker down and ordering a bunch. If you’re interested in getting one, see the website for the comic strip Goats.
I know Voldemort comes in close with Cheney for being the best candidate, but Voldemort’s ability to use magic makes him a much better choice than any muggle.
You’re not alone. Check out: PostSecret
It makes me happy.
P.S.: I normally wouldn’t change a post after posting it– but I realize this “makes me happy” makes me seem a bit wicked, given the sadder posts on PostSecret. When I first checked the site and made this post, it only had some darkly humorous posts– not those that are down-right sad. In any case– its worth checking out! (P.S. added August 14, 2006)
I’m scared of black bears, but obviously this kitty isn’t! See the story below on the kitty who chased a black bear up a tree.

I’d like to believe my cat Mika is this tough but I think she would have shied away from the bear– even though the first time she saw deer in our yard she crouched, twitched her tail and made the same “I want to eat that” noises that she makes when she sees a bird.
