Thoughts on my writing process

December 22nd, 2008

Write a bunch of stories and examples that are disjointed and make no sense except to you –> feel like you will never be able to get your degree or make anthropological sense out of these stories –>Writer’s block. Don’t think you can ever write that chapter. –>Do some more theory reading so you can make sense of what to write –> Go back to the “crap” stories –> Light bulb moments! It starts to congeal. –> Now the task of putting all those stories into a coherent narrative. A lot of work but you feel excited because you know what you want to say. You are putting the puzzle pieces together!

Guess where I am at now? Duh.

Writing is painful.

February 25th, 2007

So I haven’t written for awhile and that’s because I have been trying to get my first chapter of my dissertation done– a very slow and painful process!

I met with my writing group on Thursday to show them what I had so far and. . .  yikes! Not a very positive response. But, they were right.  I haven’t been writing from my perspective but instead have been trying to fit what I write into some lame theoretical framework.  BORING!

I just returned to the chapter today, starting all over, and its amazing how much better I feel about the darn thing and how much easier the wrting is going.  Good reminder that you can’t write for others!  Here’s to hoping I can get this draft done before spring break. . .

Procrastination makes things happen. . .

Just not the stuff I had hoped to get done! Spent 3 hours today looking over templates to change the look of my blog when I was supposed to be working on a grant proposal and other work due this week. . . Its funny how interesting other tasks become when you have really pressing things to do! This seems to be the story of my life this semester.

So, who knows if this darn proposal will go out on Wednesday like it is supposed to. . . but, wow, I looked at every single one of the 64 pages of templates available on WordPress.

PS: This isn’t the look I’ve settled on but it will do for now. . .
