On Wednesday I went with some friends to the release of 20 sea turtles that were being recuperated at the Topsail Island Sea Turtle Rescue. The picture below is one of the larger turtles getting released back into the sea.
All along the North Carolina barrier islands and coast volunteers monitor the nests to make sure that they remain undisturbed. Each female turtle lays about 3-4 nests a season, with approximately 100 eggs in them. My friend who volunteered several summers with the project said that once they found a hatched nest that had 180 eggs! Unfortunately many of the baby turtles die along the way to the Saragasso Sea (where they live for several years until they are large enough to brave the ocean again), which explains why its necessary to lay so many eggs.
One of the tutles, Surf City, is being tracked witha transmitter to see where he makes it to. See here for his whereabouts.

For those of you in the South, you know how kudzu takes over just about everything. Here’s an NY Times article on how the town of Chattanooga is using goats to fend off the insistent and invasive vines.

After about 2 weeks in California we came back to see our garden completely overgrown! Our sungold tomato bushes are 3-4 times as big as when we left. And we’ve got a number of yellow squash and zucchini ripening on the vine. Last night we enjoyed our first fruit of the season: a cucumber from our garden (added to our salad). Tonight we are making up a batch of pesto from the giant basil plants we’ve got going. Yay! Looks like we’ll have basil all summer long.

We got back in from California Thursday morning– back from our trip there to get married.
We’re very happy! Two days before the ceremony we were thinking: “Is this really worth it? We should have eloped.” But, afterwards we felt like all the effort and planning was completely worth it– we had a great day! Thanks to all of you who helped out. Both our NC pre-party and our ceremony and reception in Berkeley were a ton of fun for us (we hope for others too!). In the long run I am really happy that we had the ceremony instead of just going to city hall as we had first planned. One of the best parts was the ceremony and folks kind comments when we held the “circle of friends”. Thanks everyone for making it a great day!
I’ll post some pics later– we are still decompressing and resting up! It was a busy week.
