Moving, moving, moving!

July 30th, 2007

We’re off to Boston at the end of this week! We’ll miss North Carolina and the Chapel Hill area and all those we got to know here, but its time to move on since Tom will be starting school at Northeastern University’s Law program.

In June we went up to Boston to search for places in the Jamaica Plain area of Boston. We found an apartment in a three story Victorian near Franklin Park. We’re off the Orange T line, in a neighborhood known as the Parkside area. See below for a picture of our place!

We’re excited about the neighborhood which is known to be left-of-center politically/socially and to have a community feel. I’ve already scoped out several community garden sites and there is a co-housing community down the street from our place. There is also a food co-op on one of the main streets in JP (short for Jamaica Plain).
I’m not sure what I will be up to in the area, but I will start my job search in August or September! I’ll definitely continue dissertation-writing but with the Boston rental prices I’ll need to find a part-time job. I’m looking forward to the change!

Friends and family– come visit us! We have space for guests.

See here too for more info on Jamaica Plain.

WorldMapper- I’m a geek & love this site

July 1st, 2007

Ok, I just found this GREAT teaching resource that I LOVE.

The site http://www.worldmapper.org/

On this site you can find scaled to size representations of world resource use, world population, fuel use, poverty indexes, imports/exports, etc with each country shown scaled to where it stands in regards to these stats. Great visual representations for students that speak louder than words. . . gotta love those cool social geographers that came up with this site.
