Title: igrejas of pelorinho
Author: thomas zito Number of images: 11 Visits: 923 Comments: 0 Date: 10 march, 2004 Description: photos of two of the churches in Pelorinho, One is the primarily African church (A Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos - The Church Our Lady of the Rosary of the Blacks) which was built built over the course of a hundred years beginning in 1704, by the enslaved members of O Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos do Pelourinho (The Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of the Black Men of Pelourinho) since no Africans were allowed in any white church. The other church is the major colonial basilica with its deformed cherubs (some are pregnant, others have had their genitals scrubbed off). The story has it that slaves were made to carve the cherubs, angels and other statues for their Christian enslavers but not allowed to practice their own religion, Candoble; thus as an act of resistance, they purposely made the Christian symbols ugly and distorted. |
